Sunday 24th November - Robbo Pie Shop

From TRX Sam

After a week of overcast (and intermittently rainy) weather, Sunday dawned bright and sunny. Apparently the gods were smiling on my first group ride. An auspicious beginning.

Twenty-plus riders anon gathered on time at the Gymea servo ... only to be delayed for 45 minutes after Richard (who would probably love to REMAIN anonymous) filled his tank with diesel.

An elaborate de-fuelling ceremony quickly followed. Since the ride, Richard has copped so much flak from his peers that I've decided not to mention the fact that he binned his bike ten minutes into the National Park. Still, it's nice to have a "sacrificial lamb" who actually walks away unscathed. I think the gods were chuckling by this time.

So, 45 minutes late we pull out of the servo, and I (being the new girl) timidly join the tail end of the group, only to see everyone ahead of me disappear through a set of traffic lights which will be well and truly red by the time I reach them. Even Rick (the perfect sergeant-at-arms) flies past me at the last moment, thinking I'm gonna go through, while I'm actually busy performing something like an emergency stop. (Thanks for waiting for me on the other side of the intersection and being my personal chaperone, Rick!)

Well, it didn't take me long to discover rule number one on a group ride: KNOW THE ROUTE.

As I now know, following the person in front doesn't work under at least three circumstances, namely:

1.When the lights change and 20 people have already gone through on amber, or 2.When the person in front is Valentino Rossi in disguise, or 3. When the person in front DOESN'T KNOW THE ROUTE EITHER!

Trundling along at the back of the pack, and not passing any obvious signs of mishap along the way (after Richard and his oil spill, that is), I gather that the rest of the ride was uneventful for all.

We certainly traversed some spectacular country-side, via some very bike-friendly twisties. I can't believe I've never set tyre on Macquarie Pass before. Sadly, however, I wasn't quite fearless enough to burn off the removalist trucks through the bends. And as for the the late-model Minis that reportedly gave at least one rider a run for his money - they were long parked by the time I made it to the pie shop!

After re-fuelling on pies, we debated the best (or most popular) route home, then flaked out under a huge shady tree for 15 minutes ... which quickly turned into half an hour.

On the way home, the group got split roughly in half in the search for premium unleaded, while the dark clouds overhead, accompanied by a few splats of rain, encouraged everyone to get moving homeward.

In the days following the event, I have just one lingering question - who IS that guy with The Prodigy hair?
